Inside The Crescent Brands Quality Control Process: A Legacy of Quality
When it comes to preserving and protecting art, there’s no room for shortcuts in quality. That’s why, as the leading matboard manufacturer for 120+ years, Crescent Brands has set the bar for conservation-quality matboards and framing materials across the globe. Paying the utmost attention to detail – from sourcing raw materials to sending off the finished products – quality control is an integral part of our processes, ensuring the highest caliber products for framers and artists everywhere.
From Beginning To End: Quality Control In Sourcing Materials
Our meticulous quality control process starts at the very top, testing raw materials for color accuracy, archival compliance (ensuring they are acid and lignin-free), texture, and thickness. All vendors are required to submit samples for testing before any finished goods enter our facilities.
Crescent Brands is a proud member of the F.A.T.G and adheres to its stringent conservation guidelines. For this reason we conduct a series of tests to ensure the conservation quality of our matboard products.
To test for fade, the paper is subject to high-intensity light to simulate many years of sunlight, requiring no evidence of fading after 60 hours.
When testing for bleed, the paper is wrapped in white paper and submerged in distilled water for 48 hours. If the color transfers onto the paper or into the water, it fails.
Bleed test fail = non conservation
Bleed test pass = conservation
You won’t find us cutting corners in quality control, but you will find us cutting our matboards to precision. In fact, one of the most significant steps in our manufacturing process is ensuring all matboards have accurate dimensions. With Crescent Brands, each finished sheet measures 32 ⅝” by 40 ⅝”, so you get a full yield out of each board.
Ensuring Precision At Every Stage: In-Process Inspections & Post-Production Checks
Once the initial inspection and testing are complete, we conduct thorough online and offline inspections to maintain our industry-leading standards. Our QC team ensures all materials are compliant, bringing the process to a halt if specifications aren’t met. These ongoing checks uphold quality at every stage, ensuring compliance in real time. After multiple inspections, finished goods are then held up against another set of criteria before gaining final approval – testing lamination strength, flatness, cut accuracy, bevel quality, and various cosmetic checks. This final step guarantees our customers only receive the best because, at Crescent Brands, quality is our promise to you.
