When it comes to custom framing, not all matboards are created equal. The Fine Art Trade Guild (FATG) sets internationally recognized standards for framing, ensuring artwork receives the right level of protection based on its value and purpose. At Crescent Brands, we proudly align our matboards with these levels, making it easier for framers to choose the right board for every project.

Busting the “Acid-Free” Myth
One of the biggest misconceptions in framing is the term acid-free. It sounds protective, but not all “acid-free” boards provide true conservation.
Here’s the truth:
- Acid-Free = Acid-Neutralized. These boards are treated with calcium carbonate to be temporarily pH neutral.
- The Problem: They still contain lignin, which causes acids to return over time.
- The Solution: True conservation matboards are purified to remove both acid and lignin, delivering lasting protection.
Remember: Acid-Free ≠ Conservation. Framers and customers alike deserve clarity, and Crescent Brands is committed to helping make the distinction clear.
Why It Matters
The right matboard isn’t just a design choice; it’s a preservation choice. By understanding FATG Levels and choosing Crescent Brands matboards aligned to these standards, framers can confidently match the right level of protection to every piece of art, photo, or collectible.
